THE TRAVELER

About the collection:

This collection is inspired by an old side saddle from the 17th century. The pattern is formed from slender plant tendrils that are shaped into circular forms that overlap and intertwine.

The backstory of the side saddle:

In the 17th century, most men in Iceland worked with iron and brass crafting during the winters, and almost every farm had a workshop or smithy where they cast and crafted decorative items for saddles and riding gear with all kinds of images.

The images are made using a technique called repoussé and are referred to as 'repoussé work', it is a metalworking technique used to create raised reliefs. The process involves sketching the pattern on the back side of the sheet and then hammering and pressing the design from the back so that it stands out on the front surface.

It is clear that the metalwork of the period when side saddles were used in Iceland was highly developed and reflects expertise in a craft that encompassed creativity and diversity in style and imagery.
